On the 22 August 1849 the Liverpool registered barque, Victoria, ran aground on the Pentland Skerries. Famous local Engineer, James Bremner, managed to bring ashore some of her cargo of cotton bales, before the vessel floated off unaided and after some difficulty she was taken in tow, beached at Lybster and broken up.
James Bremner was later presented with an electroplated teapot, dated 1849, 11" long, 6 3/4" high, with a presentation inscription; "To Mr James Bremner, from the Underwriters and Patent concerned, for his exertions in saving the cotton and wreck of the Victoria in the Pentland Firth Skerries".
