Having been informed that a steamer had gone aground just outside Wick Harbour and in order to save precious time, the Coxswain of the Wick lifeboat took the unusual step of manning the Thurso lifeboat, which had been moored in the harbour since being involved in the rescue of the Swedish barque Hans the previous day. It was around 6.30am in the morning and the seas in Wick Bay were at that time very heavy. The vessel in distress turned out to be the fishing vessel Shaw of Aberdeen and the crew of 2 were rescued by the Wick lifeboatmen in Co-operator No.3 and subsequently landed in Wick two hours later.
