The fishing vessel Scottish Maid ran ashore between Staxigoe and Noss Head. The crew of three were rescued but vessel became total loss.
As a seventeen year old living in Papigoe at the time, I was one of the many locals from Papigoe and Staxigoe who managed to get aboard the Scottish Maid before she eventually brooke up and sank. Many items were "salvaged" by the locals including her VHF, Decca, numerous tools and ropes etc, which were mostly landed by small boat at Staxigoe Harbour.
The Scottish Maid was built by Richard Irvin of Peterhead in 1963 and originally called the Daisy (PD433). She was built as a replacement for Daisy (PD334) which was lost in the North Sea in August 1962; the crew being picked up by a Danish boat, after being in a liferaft for over twenty hours. She was sold in 1974 and renamed and numbered Scottish Maid (BF222). She moved to Orkney in 1979 and took number K553.
