The Aberdeen registered sloop, Ruby, came ashore at Freswick in heavy surf, while heading westward to the fishing grounds. John Mowat, a local pilot, and the Coastguard officers managed to save four of the crew. Her Master, Captain Wood and the ship's Mate were reported drowned.
