This Belgian steam trawler (O 126), struck the south side of Freswick Bay in dense fog while on passage from Ostende to the Icelandic fishing grounds. Her engines were put full astern which took her clear but was leaking so badly that she rapidly sank in the middle of Freswick Bay while her skipper and crew of 14, augmented by an agricultural student on holiday, hurriedly took to their lifeboat which was carried by the ebb tide round Duncansby Head and they landed at Warse.
Due to the shallow location of her sinking it is believed that her mast broke the surface of the water for many years after.
Possible position is 3.5 cables 164 degrees from Skirza Haven. 58 35 33N, 03 03 07W.
The Neptune was built of steel in 1917. She was 34m long, 6m wide and 253 gross registered tons.
