The Stornaway registered brig, Mary, was demolished on Scrabster Sands by a northerly gale, while on her way from Newcastle to Dublin with a cargo of coal and under the Command of Captain McKenzie. Her crew of five were rescued with difficulty by John Morgan, a member of the Thurso Coastguard, who was awarded the Silver Medal of the RNLI for his courage.
