This Bergen registered steel steamer was torpedoed by German aircraft off Duncansby Head while en-route from St Johns, Newfoundland to Rodham Dock with a cargo of wood pulp. There were no casualties.
The Marstenen was built in 1915. She was 80.8m long by 12.8m wide and had a depth of 5.5m. She was 1832 gross registered tons and her triple expansion engine and single screw could propel her at 10 knots. She was originally launched as the ss Viv.

On 10 January 1941 the wreck's position was given as 58 20 00N, 002 31 00W, approximately.
The wreck was examined 28 June 1985 at 58 20 16N, 002 39 58W. Trisponder ranges - Toftcarl 26400 metres, Muckle Skerry 42047 metres; Noss Head 27399 metres, Duncansby Head 40016 metres.
Decca = (n scot) red c 21.95, green b 42.90, purple i 58.30. The least echosounder depth was 48m in a general depth of 59 metres. No scouring was observed. The side scan sonar indicated a height of 7 metres, and length of approximately 60 metres (196 feet). Report by HMS BEAGLE.
