During dense fog at around 8am on the morning of Monday 29 September 1902, Captain Hoeslef, his wife, sister and the twelve man crew of the Norwegian steamer Lotos of Krageroe, landed safely with their personal effects at Scarfskerry in the steamers three boats. They had abandoned their vessel, which had been bound with coals from Glasgow for Stavanger, Norway after she foundered 8 miles south east of Stroma lighthouse having struck rocks 2 hours earlier. They arrived at Thurso the following day from where they were forwarded to Leith by Mr David Coghill, the Norwegian Consul.
The Lotos was built in 1890 and was 46m long with a beam of 8m. She was 517 gross registered tons.
