During a strong south-easterly breeze the 100 ton Norwegian schooner, Emmanuel, of Porsgrund under the command of Master H. Arveskang and having a cargo of billet wood, entered Wick bay where she cast anchor, after previously springing a leak. There being a heavy surf on at the time and the tide being half-ebb, fears were entertained for the safety of the crew, but in a short time they were brought ashore in one of the salmon cobbles. As the tide made she commenced to drag anchor and by morning was on the sandbank at the back of the harbour. At low water a small portion of the cargo and rigging was saved, but by the afternoon the vessel had broken up and become a total wreck.
