The screw steamer Cotherstone of London 1466 tons, Captain Hunter for Dublin to Sunderland in ballast, went ashore on the rocks west of Dunnet Head in a dense fog on the Monday morning at One o’ clock. There was no hope of getting her off and she became a total wreck. The material on board and all loose fittings were however removed ashore. The crew were never in danger as the water was quite smooth at the time when she struck. The Masters wife and a few lady passengers were landed at Thurso by Brough pilots and attended by Messrs. D and H Sinclair, Lloyds agents there.
The Cotherstone was built of iron in 1880 and was 88m long by 11m wide. Another report has her at 2234 tons gross.
Possible position is 1 mile west of Dunnet Head lighthouse at 58 40 33N 03 22 00W.
